Multiple Reentry Vehicles were developed as a way to overcome early missile defense systems. This original concept has been extended so that each missile now has the capability to strike several targets hundreds of miles apart. Most strategic missiles now carry Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles, or MIRVs.
This technology has further been enhanced by allowing each reentry vehicle to become maneuverable. These vehicles are referred to as MARVs. This maneuverability allows for very high accuracy against a target.
